A newly wed king and queen had a child and named him Oedipus. The king went to an oracle to see if the baby would be a good son and king. The oracle told them that the baby would kill his father and marry his mother. To try and prevent this the king and queen had a shepherd take the baby and hang it from a tree to die. The shepherd could not go through with it and took the baby to another shepherd who gave it to the king and queen of the next kingdom over because they had no children.
Oedipus grew up never knowing the truth of his parents and was very happy with his foster parents. One day when Oedipus was walking about a commoner said that a foreigner could never be their king. Oedipus was confused and asked his foster father about this and he dismissed it. Oedipus was determined for the truth and went to an oracle who told him that he would kill his father and marry his mother. To try and prevent this horrible fate Oedipus fled the kingdom to go to the city of Thebes.
While traveling to the city of Thebes Oedipus comes across his real father and ends up killing him without knowing he was his father. After defeating his actual father he decided he would face the sphinx that guards the city of Thebes.
Oedipus defeats the sphinx outside of Thebes and the sphinx was so embarrassed that she threw herself off of the cliff.
After defeating the sphinx Oedipus was rewarded with the thrown and his actual mother as a wife. They had four children together but soon after a dark plague surrounded the kingdom. In hopes of stopping the plague Oedipus went to an oracle to try and get a solution. The oracle told him he was the problem and explained that he was married to his actual mother.
Oedipus was so ashamed and disgusted he fled the kingdom with his two daughters and gauged out his eyes. Meanwhile his wife/ mother hung herself and the sons were left in charge of the kingdom. A few years after fleeing Oedipus died and his daughters returned home to a disaster.
