Storyboard Text

  • I name the bishops!
  • how could Pope Gregory VII think he is incharge of me?!?!
  • You shall no longer be the pope!
  • you cannot get rid of me as a pope! I shall excommunicate you!
  • Pope Gregory VII was a pope that created his own rules and said that he would be allowed to establish bishops by himself and Henry IV did not like this at all
  • Henry VI did not like these rules and in response, he would ignore them and he would name his own bishops. Soon after he appointed a new bishop, Pope Gregory VII appointed a rival one.
  • i forgive you
  • Henry VI wanted to remove Pope Gregory VII from the position of the pope because he had enough of him and the rules he made But the pope had other ideas. He excommunicated Henry VI.
  • Across Europe members of the clergy and secular rulers took sides. In an effort to end his excommunication Henry VI stood outside the pope's castle to see and say sorry to him but the pope waited 3 days to see him. So Henry VI had to wait 3 days outsides the pope's castle.
  • When Pope Gregory VII  decided to see Henry VI he finally forgave him but the conflict still continued. Henry later got his revenge by marching an army to Rome and forcing Pope Gregory VII out of his position.
  • The struggles for power between the popes and the kings continued after Pope Gregory VII and Henry VI died.  Later the Holy Roman empire reached an agreement called the Concordat of Worms and it told who could appoint bishops and who could give fiefs of land etc. despite the agreement popes and kings continued to have conflicts
