I think we should make Mier's recommendations a law!
Yes it is.
American influence is growing everyday.
Haden Edwards was an empresario who got a contract from the Mexican government in 1825. The contract gave him permission to settle 800 families near Nacogdoches. Haden Edwards thought some of the old settler's titles to the land were fake. In addition to that he said that the people should pay him even though they already owned the land. The settlers were very unhappy and the following year when Haden Edwards son became the alcalde of the settlement they complained to the government. The government revoked Haden Edwards contract and the settlers declared themselves a free republic and established the Fredonian Declaration of Independence.
The Battle of Velasco
Mexico began to worry about the number of Americans in Texas, so they sent General Manuel de Mier y Teran to inspect Texas and report back with the number of Americans and Tejanos. He set out to explore and returned saying that American influence in Texas had increased. To help decrease American influence in Texas Mier y Teran made recommendation to the president. The recommendations were 1.Mexico should increase trade with Texas to discourage trade with the U.S.,2. They should send more soldiers to Texas to help keep order in and increase Mexico's control. 3. He said to encourage more Europeans and Mexicans to settle in Texas.
The Battle of Gonzales
Come and take it!
The Mier y Teran report caused the government to pass the law of April 6, 1830.The main purpose of the law was to control American influence in Texas. This law caused almost all empresarios to lose their contracts. It also banned immigration from the U.S.In addition to all of this the Mexican government also began collecting customs duties for imports.
The Siege of the Alamo
Remember the Alamo!
John Austin and his allies loaded a cannon onto a ship at Brazoria. They reached Velasco but Mexican troops refused to let them pass.On June 26, 1832 the battle started and lasted for three days.Mexico ran out of ammunition and had to surrender. After the battle Texans went to Anahuac with the cannon to find the conflict there was no longer a problem.
Mexican general Domingo de Ugartechea had ordered that the people of Gonzales hand over the cannon because he thought that there would be trouble.Of course they refused and buried the cannon.Since they had said no Ugartechea decided to take it by force. While trying to keep out the Mexican soldiers they had asked for aid and soon reinforcements came.On October 2, 1835 the battle started and was quite short. The Mexican army retreated from San Antonio and Texas won with no casualties.
As Mexican soldiers advanced on the Alamo Green Jameson was building up its defenses.Even with all of the defenses though the Alamo would be hard to protect because there was only 150 people defending it.On February 24th Mexico began firing on the Alamo and William B. Travis wrote a letter to the surrounding towns for aid.On March 3rd 32 volunteers came to assist them.On March 6th the Mexican soldiers attacked and overtook the Alamo.
