  • These are the new rules
  • This is Charlemagne a devoted Christian who was rewarded by Pope Gregory and was crowned emperor. He wanted to rule in a Christian manner and improve the church. Charlemagne supported the pope by traveling with him. After Charlemagne was crowned there were two lasting effects one is it strengthened the power of the church and in other parts of Europe it was seen as an insult that the church had so much power.
  • I dethrone you
  • How dare you
  • Charlemagne believed that God had made him emperor in order to do God's work on Earth. The pope believed that the church had made Charlemagne emperor. Then 200 years later these ideals led to a clash between an emperor and the pope.
  • Why did you appoint a bishop
  • I do not Know
  • Pope Gregory issued rules that declared his supreme authority. Additionally he claimed the power to appoint bishops and dethrone emperors. He would do if they did not respect the rules.
  • Im glad we have come to agree
  • Your appointed bishop get a 200 acre fief of land
  • The conflict arose when Henry ignored the pope's rules and named his own bishop for the city of Milan. Then Pope appointed a rival bishop. Lastly the pope excommunicated Henry and freed Henry’s subjects. Half of Europe thought what the pope did was justified and he should be able to do it while other people thought the exact opposite.
  • The conflict was the pope made rules that stated only the church could appoint bishops. After he did this King Henry appointed a bishop. So the pope excommunicated him.The people across Europe either agreed with the pope's decision or agreed with Henry.
  • The conflict ended when both sides reached an agreement called the Concordat of Worms. This agreement stated the church had the sole authority to appoint bishops. It also allowed emperors to give fiefs or grants of lands to bishops to win their loyalty.
