Rosa Hubermann (Right) is the wife of Hans Hubermann who is the one in the middle. Liesel (Left) is their adopted daughter, who receives beatings from Rosa and gets to roll Hans's cigerattes.
Hans hubermann's job is to paint houses and he has done that for a while. He is shunned from ever joining the Nazi Party because he painted over mean words on a jews house.
Rosa Hubermann brings Liesel along with her to collect and deliver clothes to the rich people on the hill. Liesel is happy to go sometimes, but seems afraid of the major's wife.
Rudy is the next door neighbor who has five brothers and sisters. He's first impression of her is that she is a lunatic and he also fell in love with her at first glance.
Rudy and Liesel constantly bicker, but the kind that friends do. They play soccer with others and race each other home, which got liesel in trouble for getting mud all over her clothes.
Liesel, Rudy, Hans, and Rosa all do not like Hitler. Liesel finds out later in the book that she is jewish and doesn't like what hitler is doing to everybody. Liesel says she hates him once outside of the house and Hans, regrettingly, smacks her across the face. He tells her not to ever say that outside of the house again
