Storyboard Text

  • The church has crowned you king!
  • No god has made me emperor to do his work on Earth!
  • The pope should be able to appoint bishops, remove emperors, and supreme authority over both church and secular leaders.
  • I'm going to appoint a rival bishop for this city, and attempt to remove that pope
  • After the pope crowned the emperor he had though god must have crowned him to do his work on Earth. The pope thought differently and though it was the church that had done it. These two views created a clash between the pope and the emperor years later
  • For attempting to ban me the emperor is excommunicated
  • These rules were created by the pope and the emperor was unhappy and felt that this attacked his rights as an emperor
  • Yes lets make an agreement so we don't have to deal with this
  • We have to stop this fighting and come up with a solution
  • It's good that we don't have to argue about this anymore
  • The king didn't like these rules so he attempted to break them. First, he appointed a rival bishop for his own city. Then, he attempted to get rid of the pope
  • But trying to ban the pope was the wrong idea and the emperor got excommunicated from the church. This was very bad for the emperor.
  • They made and agreement and this agreement was called the book of worms and it ended all of the arguments between emperors and popes.
  • They created the book of worms. This book stated that the pope could appoint bishops. But it also allowed the emperors to give fiefs to bishops to win their loyalty.
