Now that I am Pope, I am going to make some rules!!
When Pope Gregory VII became the Pope he decided to make some rules. He issued a list of rules stating that the had authority of the secular and the non secular people. He also declared that only the Pope can announce bishops. He also stated that he can remove the emperor from power.
King Henry IV was suprised and little angry at the Popes new rules. They were a direct attack on his power and rights. Henry ignored the Popes rules and made his own bishop. In response the Pope named a rival bishop.
WHAT!!! Why did he make new rules. You know what. I am going to make my own bishop.
The next move that King Henry did was that he decided to remove Pope Gregory VII from office. This did not work and it backfired on him. This is when things got bad for the King.
Oh!! I see. The Pope is challenging me, well lets see what he says when I remove him from office!
When King Henry IV tried to remove Gregory from the Pope, he responded in a harsh way. First, the Pope excommnicated the King. He then freed Henry's subjects from their oaths of loyalty to the emperor.
He tried to remove me from the Pope. Well I am going to remove him from the church.
Europe had to choose which side they were on, the Popes or the Kings. In response to the Pope excommunitating him, King Henry decided to go to the Pope and ask for his forgiveness. The King stood outside of the Popes catle before the Pope let him in to speak with him. The Pope eventually forgave Henry.
I forgive you King Henry.
Please Gregory. Please forgive me. I beg of you.
Henry was still angry and he decided to take revenge. Even though the Pope Gregory forgave King Henry he still marched to the Pope's castle and forced him from office. The power struggle between Popes and Kings struggled for many years after that.
