I should be able to choose bishops and dethrone emperors!
This is a direct attack on my power and rights.
Charlemagne was a devout Christian. His goal was to improve the church. He ordered priests, monks, and nuns to live strictly by church rules. Charlemagne traveled to Rome to support the pope. In reward Pope Leo crowned Charlemagne emperor. The coronation strengthened the power of the church, then it led to a split between the Eastern Orthodox and Roman Catholic churches.
No you are not!
I am removing you from pope.
Charlemagne believed that God had made him emperor in order to do God’s work on Earth. Pope leo believed that the Church had made Charlemagne emperor. 200 years later these different views led to the dramatic clash between an emperor and the pope.
Concordat of Worms?
Pope Gregory issued a list of rules declaring his supreme authority over both Church and secular leaders. He declared that the pope had power to choose bishops and dethrone emperors. Henry IV thought this was a direct attack on his own power and rights.
This conflict will go on for years.
The clash began when Henry ignored the pope’s rules and named his own bishop for the city of Milan, Italy. In response, pope gregory appointed a rival bishop. Then Henry tried to remove Gregory as pope. The people across europe took sides.
In 1122, the church and Holy Roman Empire reached an agreement called the Concordat of Worms. This agreement gave the sole authority to appoint bishops. But it also allowed emperors to give fiefs, or grants of land, to bishops in order to win their loyalty .
Despite this agreement they still had conflicts. The concordat of Warms was not quite successful. Through out history these conflicts continued.
