Storyboard Text

  • Today I crown you  the Holy Roman  Emperor for protecting me from my rivals
  • I'm Charlemagne and I promise that I will do all that I can to make Europe, Christian
  • Thank you God! Thank you for making me King!
  • I alone have the power to appoint the bishops. I also will now have the power to take the King from power.
  • Charlemagne was a king who wanted to turn Europe Christian. Charlemagne protected the Pope from rivals in return the Pope declared Charlemagne emperor. It strengthened the power of the Church and angered the people of Eastern Europe.
  • How dare he! Pope Gregory should not have the power to do that!
  • Charlemagne believed that god had made him emperor. The Pope believed that the church had made Charlemagne king. 200 years later these views led to a dramatic clash.
  • Henry because of your actions I have no other choices than to excommunicate you.
  • In 1073 Pope Gregory issued a list of rules declaring his supreme authority over both Church and secular leaders. He declared that the Pope alone had the power to choose bishops. He even claimed to have the power to remove emperors from the throne.
  • The  Concordat of Worms This is the official document claiming that the Pope has the power to choose the bishop and the King has the power to grants them fiefs.
  • In spite of what Pope Gregory said King Henry appointed his own bishop. Then Gregory appointed his own bishop to watch over the same territory. At one point he even tried to remove Pope Gregory from power.
  • Henry continued to ignore the Pope's rules. In response to this Pope Gregory excommunicated Henry. People across Europe were happy because they were free from Henry's rule.
  • King Henry did eventually get Pope Gregory kicked out. Because of this conflict Europe decided to come up with Concordat of Worms which allowed the Pope to choose the bishop and the king to grant him land. The Concordat of Worms was not a success because they continued to have conflicts.
