  • Child hood life 
  • I was the youngest of 4 children and the only boy.
  • My tribal name was Rolihlahla.
  • I was born on July 18 , 1918 in a south African  village called Qunu.  The village was in a valley surrounded by grass covered hills.
  • Teen life 
  • My father died when I was 12 and I went to live with my uncle. My uncle helped me obtain a good education.
  • I attended church schools and was a Christian. At age 20 I enrolled at Fort Hare College one of the few universities that allowed full time black students.
  • I spent most of my days herding cattle, milking cows, and studying.
  • I was very interested in politics and current world problems.

  • Adult Life 
  • In 1944 I joined the ANC and helped form the Youth League. That same year I also married my first wife Evelyn.

  • I got very sick in jail. The government was afraid that I would die in jail and cause more violence to break out with my supporters, I was released from jail.
  • I was the symbol for freedom for black South Africans.
  • I was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993.

  • I died in 2013 at age 95.
  • In 1951, I was elected president of the ANC Youth League.
  • 
  • In 1952, my friend Tambo and myself opened the first black law partnership in the country.
  • 
  • I fought for equal rights for the black South Africans such as myself. I spent half of my adult life in prison for fighting against the government.
  • 
  • I was South Africa's first black president.
