King charlamagne, I am Pope Leo III. I am running from my rivals. Please will you protect me?
I, Pope Leo III, am crowing you. King Charlemagne, EMPEROR!
God is the one who crowned me king not your church!
NO! God didn't crown you king! The church did!
Charmlemagne was a European King and a devout christian who wanted to forge a European Empire. Pope Leo III was fleeing Rome because his rivals had plotted aginst him and planned to blind him and remove him from office. Pope Leo III went to Charlemegnes court for safety. When Pope Leo III went back to Rome people found that he was under the Kings protection.
I am the new Pope, Gregory. I have established a new set of rules that makes me have a lot of power over pretty much everybody.
WHAT! I am King Henry and who said you have power over me?!
The Pope and the King got along very well. Charlemagne traveled to Rome to with the Pope to support him. So on Christmas day Pope Leo III crowned King Charlemagne emperor. When Charlemagne became emperor it caused a big disagreement with the Byzantine Emperor. But, it also allowed the Pope to crown emperors and also to strip them of their title.
Hmmm...? I wonder what Pope Gregory would think if I ignored his rules? I should try and get rid of him as Pope!
Charlemagne believed that God was the one who crowned him emperor because he wanted him to do God's work. And that the Pope's job was to help him do God's work. Pope Leo believed that the church had crowned Charlemagne emperor and it was the emperor's job to help the church in doing god's work. 200 years later this disagreement led to a dramatic fight between emperor and Pope.
Hmmmm…? Fine, I forgive you.
In 1073 a new Pope was selected, Pope Gregory VII. In 1073 Pope Gregory made a set of rules saying that he had overall authority over both the church and secular. Pope Gregory claimed that he could choose bishops and remove emperors from the throne if he wanted to. King Henry was very upset so he ignored the rules and chose his own bishop and then he attempted to remove Gregory as Pope.
The conflict between Pope Gregory and King Henry began when King henry was upset with the Pope and decided to ignore his rules. King Henry decided to appoint his own Bishop, so Pope Gregory did the same thing. Pope Gregory then excluded King Henry from the church. The King's subjects began to pick sides but they were also freed from their promises of loyalty to the emperor.
The feud ended when King Henry went to Pope Gregory's castle and asked him for forgiveness, but the conflict continued. The disagreement between the Pope and King went on long after Henry and Gregory died.Eventually in 1122, the church and the Holy Roman Empire came up with an agreement called the concordat of Worms, which was a failure. This stated that only the church could appoint bishops and only the emperor could grant pieces of land to bishops for loyalty.
