  • The Mountain Men in Oregon County often trapped animals, hiked through forests, selling furs, and learned survival skills. They contributed a role in the Westward Expansion by forming trails and leading settlers to the Oregon Trail.

  • Texas is ours!! This is our territory.
  • Life on the Oregon Trail had many hardships such as disease, weather, and rough terrain. This allowed approximately 50,000 Americans to move westward and live in Oregon.

  • Manifest Destiny is an idea that the United States is destined by God to expand its territory and spread its democracy across North America. This idea used to justify American beliefs in white superiority over Native Americans and Mexicans who had been living on the land for generations.

  • Mexico, who still wanted control over Texas, was upset about the American Annexation. This lead to a the Mexican-American War that lasted for twenty months. After the war ended, the U.S. gained California, New Mexico, and Arizona.
  • After Joseph Smith was killed by an angry mob in Illinois, Brigham Young became a Mormon leader. Then, he established a refuge at Great Salt Lake, Utah. This lead to Utah becoming a State.
  • John Sutter discovered gold on his land in Northern California, 1848. People from the United States, Europe, China, Australia, and South America rush to California to find their fortunes. This opportunity even made a few people rich and also helped establish many homes in California.
