Haden Edwards received his empresario contract , that gave him permission to settle 800 familys near Nacogdoches, from Mexico. This contract made him respect the people and land who had legal rights on the land they lived on. He wanted people to pay him extra fees for the land that they had already owned. This made many of the old settlers mad and they suspected fraud. The government canceled his contract in October 1826. In January 1827, the Mexican troops and miltia were coming. Haden Edwards fled and the republic collapsed.
The Grass Fight
Colonel Juan Davis Bradburn went to texas for the Law of April 6, 1830. There they built a fort at the mouth of the Trinty River. This settlement was known as Anahauc. A genral land commissioner, Madero, had been sent to Texas to issue land titles for these settlers who lived there before. Bradburn thought that Madero was violating the authority over land grants. In February, Madero was arrested and the Texans were mad.
The Goliad Massacre
Piedras arrived from Nacogdoches and blamed Bradburn for conflict with U.S. settlers. When Bradburn resigned the settlers felt like their freedom was back. On June 26, 1832 there was a fighting outbreak and the Mexican soldiers had to surrender because they ran out of ammunition. Most Mexican troops left and joined sides in the civil war between Santa Anna and President Bustamante. The Texans waiting and hoped that Santa Anna would help restore the Constitution of 1824.
Battle of San Jacinto
On November 26 , one of Burleson's scouts, Erastus "Deaf" Smith, came to the camp. There was a rumor that spread quickly about how that at the camp the soldiers were carrying silver. Burleson sent out a troops, led by Bowie, to retrieve the silver. To their surprise the bags were ot holding silver. In fact, it was holding grass for the horses and they soon realized that it was for the feed for their starving animals.
On March 27, Mexican soldiers were commanded to execute any Texan prisoners. Some of which included Fannin's troops and Texas solders that were caught outside of Victoria. All together 400 people were shot and killed. Some of them ran and escaped and some even survived the smoky confusion. Francita Alavez helped a few people escape and they later called her the Angel of Goliad.
The Mexican soldiers thought that they were no match for the Texas troops of 900 compared to the Mexican troop of 1,200. The Texas troops did a surprise attack on the Mexican troops when they least suspected it. By the end of the fight, 630 Mexican soldiers had been killed while only nine Texas troops died. Santa Anna disappeared during the fight and was later fond dressed up as one of the prisoners. Texas won its independence and the Republic of Texas was made.
