Then the girls go down into the basement and vote on you.
I wish Tracey got a letter.
Follow The Rules, You're Almost There
I know you're not suppose to talk to me.
Millicent is in Betsy's basement and is thinking about her past week. She is proud of herself for making it this far.She moves her hair and remembers the egg being cracked over her head, and now her hair was stiff.
I eat heather birds' eyebrows for breakfast.
Millicent recalls her getting the invitation to join the sorority. She talks to Louise while walking to the drugstore about the invitation and learns about how the sorority lets you in. She learned that they vote on you and if you get three blackballs, then you don't make it. She is sad that Tracey didn't make it and learns why she doesn't make it.
Is This What I Really Want?
Should I join the sorority or not?
It's time to tell the girls that I don't want to join the sorority.
Herb Dalton, the basketball captain, walked up to Millicent while she was getting ice cream. She isn't allowed to talk to him, due to the sorority initiation rules. He new she couldn't talk, and if she did, he would report her. Instead, she smiles and walks away.
Let's go. It's time.
On the way to town, Bev tells Millicent to ask everyone on the bus what they had for breakfast. Due to her initiation, she must do it. She goes up to people and says she is taking a survey and needs to know what they ate for breakfast. She could tell that people new that she was taking a "survey" for her initiation. She asked the last person, and he said that he ate heather bird eyebrows. She laughs and feels a connection between her and a complete stranger.
Lying in her bed, she thinks about all that she has learned about the sorority. She hears sparrows chirping out side and visualizes them, a pale grey-brown bird and a flock one like the other exactly the same. Then she thinks of the heather bird, free of being conformed. She is thinking of whether to become a part of the sorority and leave her friends, especially her best friend Tracy, or not join at all live the life she wants to. It's then she realizes what her final decision is.
Seated now on the wood pile, Millicent knew she had overcome the initiation and knew there were two kinds of victories. One would be becoming a part of the sorority which is something she has wanted to accomplish for a long time. The other would be much harder, but she knew thats what she wanted. It would be hard to explain to the girls but she knew it was the right decision. The overall message is being your true self because Millicent wanted to get in but realizes she will change and be like the others, she won't be friends with the people she knows now.
