  • Charlemagne was a christian ruler who wanted to improve the church. Pope Leo had to leave Rome because rivals had planned to blind him and remove him from office, and then Charlemagne had protected him in his court.
  • This is an attack to my power and rights!!

  • The Pope had crowned Charlemagne emperor about a year after he had gone back to Rome. Two lasting effects of this coronation were that it strengthened the power of the Pope because it established the idea that only the pope could where the crown and this led to the disagreement over who could wear the crown.
  • I've gona against the Popes rules and chose my own bishop, which is you.
  • The Pope believed that the church made Charlemagne emperor. While Charlemagne believed that God made him emperor to do his work on earth. About 200 years after Charlemagne's coronation, these different views led to a clash between the emperor and the pope.

  • And I give them grants of land so I can win over their loyalty
  • In 1073 the Pope declared that he had authority of secular and church leaders, that he had the power to choose bishops, and the power to remove emperors from the throne. And King Henry thought that the Popes rules were a direct attack to his power and his rights.
  • King Henry decided to go against the Pope's rules and had chose his own bishop in Milan, Italy. So Pope Gregory then chose his own rival bishop. Then Henry tried to remove Gregory from being Pope. Lastly, Pope Gregory excommunicated King Henry.
  • ok
  • The conflict ended by Henry standing outside of the castle for 3 days until the Pope noticed him. They made up, but conflict still continued. Henry came into the Pope’s office with an army and forced the pope from office. Concordat of Worms is the agreement where the Pope has power to choose bishops, but emperors were allowed to give grants of land to bishops so he could win their loyalty. It wasn’t a success because the popes and rulers still had conflicts.
