Charlemagne was a Christian ruler who believed that he was sent to this earth to do God's work. Charlemagne and the pope were good friends who worked together. He thought of victories as proof of God's blessings. He made priests, monks, and nuns live strictly by church principles. He also had scholars edit manuscripts to create a library of Christian texts.
This is my kingdom.
Charlemagne received an important visitor the next day. Pope Leo III had come because rivals in Rome planned to remove him as pope. Charlemagne decided that he needed to go to Rome with Pope Leo III to support him. So that's exactly what he did.
Henry IV is now our enemy!!
After a long journey, the finally made it to Rome. Charlemagne was surprised with a coronation ceremony, which is when you get crowned to be emperor. The pope chose Charlemagne to be emperor. This coronation had lasting effects on Europe. For example, it strengthened the church because it made it so only the pope could choose an emperor. Also the Byzantine emperor thought of it as an insult.
Here is the peace treaty
Thank you my good sir
Once Charlemagne's empire collapsed a new German king came around. He was known as Otto the great. He made a small empire and made alliances with nobles. He eventually convinced the pope to make him the Holy Roman Emperor. Otto used Christianity to support his authority.
A monk named Pope Gregory VII and a ruler named Henry IV became enemies very quickly because they both believed they had the power to choose bishops and to remove emperors from the throne. Henry tried to excommunicate the pope which made things way worse. People of Europe took sides.
This rivalry went on long after both the pope and Henry died. Eventually, the church and the Holy Roman Empire reached an agreement called the Concordat of Worms. This meant that the church were allowed to appoint bishops. And the emperor was than allowed to give land grants. Even though the pope and church made this agreement, they continued to have conflict.
