In 1073, Pope Gregory issued list of rules declaring his supreme authority over both Church and secular leaders. Henry IV reacted because this was a attack on his power and rights. The stage was set for a clash between the two men.
The conflict started when Henry ignored the pope’s rules an named his own bishop for the city of Milian,Italy. Greogary reacted by appointing a rival bishop. Then Henry tried to remove Gregory as pope. Gregory excommunicated them and people of Europe took sides.
Conflict ended between Gregory and King Henry with the Condodat of Worms. This meant that Church has sole authority to appoint bishops. It also gave fiefs or grants of land, to bishops in order to win their loyalty.
