  • I am the Pope and I am glad to work with you Charlemagne together we will rule the empire and the church.
  • Charlemagne was a devout christian ruler and he viewed his victories as proof of god’s blessing. His goal was to rule in a Christian manner and tried to reform the church in his empire. Charlemagne and the Pope worked together and the pope rewarded Charlemagne by giving him the rights to choose bishops and crown an emperor. However, in Eastern Europe this same idea was seen as an insult to the byzantine Empire.
  • I am a christian ruler and my goal is to reform the church under my empire. I am glad to work with you to Pope.
  • The two lasting effects on the coronation were that it strengthened the power of the church in Western Europe by establishing the principle that only the pope could crown an emperor. Charlemagne believed that God made him emperor in order to do God’s work on Earth. About 200 years later these different views led to a dramatic lash between an emperor and the pope.
  • God sent me down here for a purpose and I must do his work for him and I must be higher than the Pope.
  • In 1073 Pope Gregory VII issued a list of rules declaring his supreme authority over both Church and Non-church leaders. King Henry IV reacted by saying it was a direct attack on his own power and rights and ignored the pope’s rules and named his own bishops for the city of Milan, Italy. This also caused events leading to many conflicts and arguements.
  • I want full authority over all church and non-church leaders.
  • This is obsered, this is a problem and we are now in a conflict. I will show you.
  • The conflict between Pope Gregory and King Henry was over power. It was also about who had the power over choosing the bishops, removing emperors, and declaring that the pope had full control over all people. Also, they wanted power/control over church and over non-church officials.
  • I want the power over bishops, emporers, and I want control over all people.
  • No I get the power I deserve it and I want authority to rule everyone.
  • The people across Europe reacted by taking sides and only believe and wanted one side. This caused almost a division in people for what they believe. They were standing up for their opinion and it was chaos.
  • yeah
  • The Pope should have full power not the emporers.
  • No the king should have the power you are wrong he deserves it.
  • I agree
  • The conflict ended for Pope Gregory and King Henry by the pope forgiving Henry and then later Henry took revenge on the pope by marching his army to Rome and forcing the pope from office. Later the church and the Holy Roman Empire reached an agreement which is called the Concordat of Worms. This agreement gave the church the sole authority to appoint bishops and allowed emperors to give fiefs, or grant land, to bishops in order to win their loyalty. It was a success for a little while but despite it popes and rulers continued to have conflicts.
  • We both agree to the Concordat of Worms right?
  • Yes
