  • Hopefully this king protects me from my rivals.
  • This is my dream com true!
  • I proudly present your new emperor!
  • No! You are emperor because the church needed you to assist them in doing gods work!
  • I am emperor because god needed me to teach his ways on earth!
  •  When the pope heard that rivals were planning on blinding him in order to remove him from office. The pope fled from Rome across the Alps to seek safety of the Kings court. He returned to Rome a few months later, with the kings protection.
  • I forgive you.
  • In return for safety the king crowned the king emperor, the crowning ceremony had a lasting effect on Europe. Many people believed, that only the pope could crown a king emperor. This disagreement turned into a lasting conflict between popes and kings.
  • We have reached an agreement with the Church that has a clear set of rules our empire must follow.
  • The Emperor believed he was crowned king because god wanted him to do gods work on earth. Where as the pope believed that the church had crowned him emperor in order to assist the church in doing gods work. This disagreement was a prime reason why the pope and emperor never got along.
  • I will choose a bishop if i want to.
  • I have sole authority over choosing a bishop!
  • The king visited the pope in an Italian castle. Stories say he stood outside of the castle for three days before the pope would see him. The pope forgave him, yet the conflict between popes and kings continued well after their death.
  • The church and the Holy Roman Empire came to an agreement called the Concordat of Worms. In the concordat it states that the church has sole authority to appoint bishops. Yet , it allowed the emperors to give fiefs, or grants of land, to bishops in order to receive loyalty in return.
  • Despite the agreement between the church and the holy roman empire the pope and king fought over who held the most power. Many popes and kings would go as far as excommunicating one in other in order to hold the most power. This was repeated over and over between the popes and kings.
