Hello, my name is Charlemagne and I am a king in Europe who wants to make a stabilized Christian Emprire.
I have been sent by God to do his work on Earth.
I disagree. The Church made you emperor!
Now I have full power over Europe. I can choose my own Bishops now.
Charlemagne was the king of Europe in 799. He wanted to build a strong Christian Empire. In 799, Pope Leo asked Charlemagne for protection. He agreed and was rewarded by the Pope being crowned Holy Roman Emperor.
You are appointed from my church.
Charlemagne believed that god made him emperor to do his work on Earth. The pope believed that the church made Charlemagne emperor. 200 years later these views still created a clash between the Emperor and the Pope.
Lets agree on a treaty.
Pope Gregory made himself supreme authority over both churches. Declared the Pope, alone had the power to choose bishops and remove emperors from the throne. King Henry believed that it was an attack on his own writes.
The conflict between Pope Gregory and King Henry started when Henry ignored all of the important rules and named his own bishop for the city. Next, the pope appointed a rival Bishop. Finally, King Henry was appointed for the church.
This conflict between Pope Gregory and King Henry finally ended when they decided on an agreement called the Concordat of Worms. This gave the authority to appoint Bishops to the church. This was not a success after all becauswe for the next couple hundred years, there was still conflict.
In Medieval Europe, Kings and Popes had many problems throughout the years. Although there were treaties and agreements, there was still havoc in Europe. In the long run, Popes and Kings both have their own places in society.
