It's okay, you may stay under my protection. Later we can take you back to Rome.
Please help me! I left Rome when rivals tried to blind me and remove me from office!
For helping me, you have been crowned emperor!
This is quite a surprise, but thank you nonetheless.
I say Pope should have authority over Church and secular leader, and pick a bishop alone, as well as ability to remove emperor.
Charlemagne was a devout Christian working in the Church. Charlemagne let the Pope stay under his protection after rivals attacked him. Months later, the Pope left back to Rome
What! Like I'm going to listen to him!
Sir! Pope Gregory has issued rules that he can pick a bishop, remove emperor, and authority over the Church and secular leaders.
A year later, Charlemagne went to support the pope and was surprised with being crowned ruler. This strengthened Western Europe power, showing how the pope only could crown an emperor. Eastern Europe saw this as an insult, and the Western and Eastern churches further divided.
I have come to ask if you can forgive me...
Pope Gregory issued supreme authority over the church and secular leaders. Pope alone could pick a bishop, and the pope could remove an emperor. This started to cause problems with the King, Henry IV.
With this we agree that emperor gives fiefs to bishops to win their loyalty.
And the church the ability to pick bishops
After King Henry found out what the Pope had done, he ignored his new rule. Henry named his own bishop. This started the years of quarrels between the Pope and the emperor.
After the Kings retaliation, the Pope excommunicated him. He went to the Pope in order for the excommunication to end. The Pope did forgive him and let him become King again.
After Henry was forgiven and became King again, he got revenge on the Pope. The Pope was forced out of office. The Popes and emperors continued to fight until they came to an agreement and created the Concordat of Worms.
