My name is Charlemagne. I am the king of Europe and my goal is to create a Christian empire.
Hark! Who goes there?
I am Pope Leo III. I am from Rome, for my people want to blind me and remove me from office!
I now crown you as king of Rome!
Charlemagne is the king of the Franks, and came to conquer Europe. He is a Christian ruler who encouraged law and learning. He viewed his victories as a gift from God, and was a very devout christian.
I do not agree with you at all Charlemagne. The church has made you king, not God.
God has given me many blessings throughout my life. He made me king.
Pope Leo III is a pope from Rome, and seeks shelter from his people. Charlemagne is willing to protect Leo, and after Leo goes back to Rome, he still has some trouble with his people. Then, Charlemagne travels to Rome for a year to help his friend.
I, Pope Gregory VII, now declare a new list of rules, starting with letting the pope being the only one to appoint a bishiop.
And I, King Henry VI, am highly offended by this action. I will appoint a bishop of my own since I am the king.
As a result of Charlemagne's respect and loyalty to Leo, Leo crowned Charlemagne as emperor of Rome. This was Charlemagne's dream for his whole life. Because of the coronation, there were two lasting effects on Europe. One was the strengthening of the power of the church in western Europe, and the other was the great schism that occured.
I ask thee for forgiveness!
Okay.... You are forgiven
Charlemagne strongly belived that God had made him king, but Pope Leo believed that the church made him king. This great disagreement lead to a clash between the emperor and pope 200 years later.
Pope Gregory VII announced a law that let him have authority over both Church and secular leaders. King Henry VI did not approve of this law, and decided to appoint his own bishop. King Henry also tried removing the pope from office after Gregory appointed a rival bishop. Gregory excommunicated Henry from the church after his actions.
Once Pope Gregory forgave Henry, Henry invaded Gregory with his army, and forced him out of office. Then, the Concordat of Worms was created. This was created because of the rivalry between Popes and Kings. The king gave fiefs to bishops in trade for loyalty. The Concordat of Worms almost helped, but never really changed people's minds.
