Charlemagne worked in their church. They worked together on building a new church in the kingdom. The pope granted charlemagne to become king. Popes have so much power they can make anyone into a king. Charlemagne thought he has a lot more power over the pope.
Charlemagne thought he had tons of power. The pope knows he has way more power. Charlemagne tried to rule in a christian manner. 200 years after charlemagne’s coronation these different views led to a dramatic clash between and emperor and the pope.

King Henry 5 reacted to Gregory’s new rules They were a direct attack on his power and rights. The clash began when henry ignored the popes rules and named his own bishop for the city of Milan. Pope gregory appointed a rival bishop.

Gregory declared the pope alone had the power to choose bishops. Across europe members of the clergy and secular rulers took side. The people choose a side and fight for the pope's side or the king’s side.
The power struggle between popes and rulers continued long after gregory and henry died. Eventually in 1122 the church and the holy roman empire reached and agreement gave the church the sole authority to appoint bishops.
Then they both desided to share half and half. the pope has the church proplemes . And the king has all of the king problems to deal with. So they did not fioght again.
