Hello, I am Pope Leo lll, who crowned Charlemagne.
Hello, my name is Charlemagne, who was crowned by the Holy Roman Empire in 800 A.D.
NO the church did!
God definitely crowned ME!
I am Pope Gregory and you shall follow all my rules.
I am King Henry IV and I shall avoid your rules and grant my own bishop.
Charlemagne was a Western Europe ruler who wanted to create a Christian Empire. Pope Leo and Charlemagne worked together by Charlemagne rewarding the pope protect and Pope Leo in return crowned the king. As a result, the pope won power to crown emperor which angered Byzantine Emperor.
Henry you are being excommunicated
Charlemagne believed that God had made him emperor in order to do God's work on Earth. But, Pope Leo believed that the church had made Charlemagne's coronation. Furthermore, different views led to a dramatic clash between the emperor and the pope.
In 1073, Pope Gregory issued a list of rules declaring his supreme authority over both church and secular leaders. Also, he declared only the pope could have the power to choose bishops and to even remove emperors from the throne so that he excommunicated King Henry IV. King thought the pope was direct attacking his own powers and rights. So he ignored the rules and named his own bishop for the city of Milan, Italy.
I'm so happy that we ended our conflict.
The conflict between Pope Gregory and King Henry was that he ignored all the popes rules. Like choosing his own bishop for the city of Milan, so Henry excommunicated. The people across Europe started to take sides of the members of clergy and secular rulers.
King Henry wanted to come back to the church so badly that he stood out front of the Pope's house for 3 days until the Pope saw him. The Pope than forgave him, but eventually Henry later took revenge on him. He marched his army all the way to Rome and removed the Pope from office.
Please Pope Gregory can I be back in the church
Fine. You've been excommunicated for long enough.
The conflict with the pope and king ended when the church and the Holy Roman reached an agreement called Concordant of Worms. Which agreed to give the Church the sole authority to appoint bishops. This was not successful because popes and rulers continued to have conflicts.
