This is Charlemagne, he was a devout Christian who viewed his victories as proof of God's blessing. He was so dedicated that he would order priests, monks, and nuns to live strictly by church rules. He was a very positive and devoted man and however, he wanted the title of emperor.
I hereby declare that Only a pope can appoint an emperor!
It all started when Charlemagne received an important visitor in 799. It was pope Leo III. The Pope had fled from Rome because rivals had planned to throw him from his office.
Pope Leo III trusted in Charlemagne so much. Pope Leo crowned Charlemagne that same year (799). Charlemagne was astonished by his coronation it was his dream come true! He had big plans for his rule.
well, my rule is coming to an end it was fun while it lasted.....):
King Charlemagne immediately went to work after he was crowned king. He first, established a principle that only the pope could crown an emperor. While in Eastern Europe, there was some disagreement that led to a HUGE argument.
This new order caused a schism between the two churches. The Eastern Orthodox church and the Roman Catholic church. The division also caused an attack upon the Pope and king Charlemagne and all started to crumble down.
Twards the end of Charlemagne's rule, Charlemagne started to disagree about who made him king. King Charlemagne believed that God had made him emperor, but the pope believed that the church made him emperor. After Charlemagne's rule ended, the German lands in the east where divided and they chose their own king.
