  • Pearl Harbor is a Military port close to the capital of Hawaii, Honolulu. A surprise attack from Japan commenced there on the dreadful day of December 7, 1941. Before 8 a.m. Japanese fighter planes descended on the base, where they were able to destroy or partly destroy nearly 20 American vessels, including eight U.S. battleships. Sadly, more than 2,400 Americans died in the attack, and another 1,000 people were wounded.

  • There were eight U.S. Battleships at the harbor when the attack came. All of them were destroyed, starting with USS Arizona. At 8:10, a 1,800-pound bomb crashed into the ship. The ship exploded and sank with more than 1,000 people stuck inside. Next a shower of torpedo's were dropped on to the USS Oklahoma an it slipped down and sank also. When the attack was over, all of the battleships in Pearl Harbor had been damaged. These ships included USS Arizona, USS Oklahoma, USS California, USS West Virginia, USS Utah, USS Maryland, USS Pennsylvania, USS Tennessee and USS Nevada. All but two of them were salvaged, these were Arizona and Utah didn't make it.
  • The Japanese people planned for months and months for this surprise attack. Their government thought that the only way to fix its problems was to expand into America's territory and take over its import market.
  •
  • Today, there is a memorial for the attack, at the rebuilt Pearl harbor. It's called "World War II Valor in the Pacific National Monument."
