  • Why are you trying to take all my power away 
  • I declare that i have full authority over all the seculars and the churches 
  • You are getting removed from pope. 
  • Well you are getting excommunicated from the church and i im still pope. Ha!
  • I'm on king Henry side
  • i'm on pope gregorys side 
  • Pope Gregory is giving himself the right to have full authority of secular, he can also dethrone the emperor, and he can appoint bishops alone. This made king Henry mad because he thought that the pope was challenging his power 
  • In this picture king Henry got mad at pope Gregory for the rules he made and tried to remove him from being pope but instead king Henry just got excommunicated from the church  
  • Lets come to an agreement where the church have sole authority of the bishops but you can win over their loyalty 
  • Fine. 
  • No!! stop trying to challenge my power 
  • The people across Europe reacted in different ways for example members of the clergy and secular rules took sides 
  • I want to be able to appoint my own Bishops 
  • Stories say that king Henry stood in the snow three days for the pope even though the pope forgave him the conflict was still going. For revenge the king toke revenge by marching his troops into Rome and forcing the pope from his office
  • When will pope Gregory be here 
  • Eventually the pope and the king came to agreement to the Concordat of Worms.  This agreement gave the church sole authority to appoint bishops. But it also gave the king the right to give out fiefs, or grants of land to win the bishops loyalty
  • After the king and pope died in 1122. The conflict between popes continued for many years.
