Hello, I am Pope Gregory and I have powerful ideas about the abilities of the Pope.
This list of rules that I had just stated shall help me and you.
Those rules have no effect on me. I am still superior though.
In 1073, Pope Gregory VII became the pope and had powerful ideas about the abilities of the pope. He distributed a list of rules that declared him supreme. This in turn made King Henry IV, a bit ticked off.
My rules are very important and they shall take effect no matter the case.
These rules are just simply foolish and I shall not oblige to these.
Pope Gregory rules stated that he had the power to choose bishops by himself. He also claimed that had the right to dethrone emperors that were currently ruling. Finally, he had more authority than the Church and the secular.
Fine. If you choose to be so stubborn, you shall be excommunicated.
Fine. Have it your way.
King Henry found out about Pope Gregory's rules and took it as an direct attack towards him. He started to ignore the pope's rules and named his own bishop for the city of Milan, Italy. This started a rivalry.
Gregory said he would be here soon...
Once King Henry IV named his own bishop, Pope Gregory appointed his own bishop to fight Henry's bishop. Henry then tried to remove Gregory as the pope.
Pope Gregory then excommunicated King Henry. King Henry's bishop was not listened to after this event occurred. King Henry decided to go plead to Pope Gregory in hopes of him removing his excommunication from the Church.
Legends say that King Henry stood outside of Pope Gregory's castle for three days in the snow. Pope Gregory fortunately forgave King Henry and removed his excommunication from the Church.
