Storyboard Text

  • Gather from the clergy my advisers and set out to live in perfect harmony with those around you.
  • Rivals in Rome wanted to blind me and remove me from office!
  • Take your time to recover here and when you return to take back your post, you will return under my protection.
  • This is my dream come true!
  • As a devout Christian, Charlemagne set out to improve the Church and solve his kingdoms problems. Charlemagne wanted for all his subjects to live in harmony. Additionally, he sent messengers to find and fix cases of injustice. He was a king, but he wanted to be crowned emperor to be closer to God.
  • I now have authority over secular and Church leaders. Also, I have the power to choose bishops and remove emperors from the throne.
  • Pope Leo III fled Rome when rivals threatened to harm and remove him from office. He came to Charlemagne's court in seek of help. The Pope returned months later with the backing and under the protection of Charlemagne.
  • It is MY right! You listen to me!
  • A year later, Charlemagne traveled to Rome to support the Pope. On Christmas Day, Pope Leo III surprised Charlemagne by crowning him emperor. Charlemagne and the Church continued to complete God's work on Earth.
  • 200 years after Charlemagne and Leo III, there was a strong opinioned pope. Pope Gregory VII issued a list of rules giving himself extra power and authority. Gregory's new rules did not go over well with the Holy Roman Emperor of the time.
  • Gregory VII's new rules were a direct attack on King Henry IV's power. The ability to choose bishops was the power of the Emperor and not the Pope. People throughout Europe were forced to take sides with either their king or pope. Henry was excommunicated.
  • In an attempt to end his excommunication, Henry IV visited pope Gregory VII. Gregory eventually forgave him, but their conflict continued. In revenge, Henry marched on Rome and forced Gregory from office.
