  • King Charlemagne is being crowned Emperor. What both Emperor Charlemagne and Pope Leo III did not know, was it would help divide the division of the church. It was the start conflict between Popes and Emperors.
  • I Pope Leo the III crown King Charlemagne emperor!
  • This clash had not started its effect till around 200 year later.  Charlemagne and the Pope had different views on how to do each other job. This caused even more trouble between Emperor and Pope.
  • God made me emperor so you can help me with God's work on Earth!
  • The Church made you emperor, Charlemagne! It is your duty to help the Church with God's work on Earth!
  • As Pope Gregory VII, make a list of rules. I have supreme authority over Church and the secular. I, the pope alone, can appoint bishops. I can also remove Emperors from the throne.

  • Emperor Henry IV was not pleased by these actions. He was on attack for his own rights and power.This would cause a major fight between the two.
  • It started out with Henry named his own bishop in Italy, despite the pope. In return, the pope hired a rival bishop. With this, Henry tried to remove Pope Gregory from office. Gregory did the same to Henry,freed Henry's subjects from oaths/loyalty to the king and excommunicated him. 
  • You can't make up your own rules! This is not how it works.

  • Across Europe, people of the clergy along with secular rulers were taking sides
  • Finally, the pope had forgiven Henry. But, as revenge Henry and his army marched to Rome. He forced him from being the pope.
  • Emperor Henry!
  • Pope Gregory!
  • Struggles of power continued after both Henry and Gregory had passed. Finally the Concordat of Worms was an agreement between pope and emperor. Although this worked for sometime, their was still conflicts.
  • The Concordat of Worms Written in 1122. This document gives the Church authority to appoint bishops. Also allowing emperors to give grants of land, fiefs, and only to win over loyalty, bishops.
