Storyboard Text

  • I'm Pope Leo III. I'm the pope who crowned Charlemagne.
  • My name is Charlemange, and I'm a devout Christian. I want to improve the Church.
  • Charlemagne believed that God made him emperor to do God's work on Earth. But the Pope believed differently. He believed the Church made Charlemagne emperor. This led toconflict between emperors and popes 200 years later.
  • Pope Gregory's Rules: Power to choose bishops. Power to remove emperors. Power over Church and secular leaders.
  • These rules are attacking my power and rights as emperor!
  • The rivalry between Henry IV and Pope Gregory continued. Pope Gregory even removed Henry from throne when Henry tried to remove Gregory from position as pope.
  • I appoint you as bishop. You will be a rival to Pope Gregory's bishop.
  • Europe reacted to this conflict by taking sides. King Henry IV and Pope Gregory's side. The bishops, clergy, and secular people even chose sides. This agreement could only be settled in one way. A peace treaty.
  • This peace treaty was called Concordat of Worms. The Concordat of Worms gave both pope and emperor their own rules. These ruleswere assigning bishops and what not. This agreement between the pope and emperor did not stop the conflict though.
