Charlemagne was a European king who wanted to create a Christian empire. In 799 Pope Leo asked Charlemagne for protection. He agreed and was rewarded by being crowned the Roman Emperor. As a result, the pope won power to crown the empire which angered the Byzantine empire.
This is terrible!
Charlemagne believed God made him emperor. Instead the pope believe the church granted Charlemagne with being emperor. After Charlemagne's coronation, a dramatic clash was brought on the emperor and the pope.
Obey my rules!
the coronation had a long time effect on all of europe. thsis strenghten the powrer of the western europe by putting out the principle that only the pope coud crown an empoorer. Howveer the eastern empire took it as an insult. this differences of an opinion leasd to a schism beteween the eastern orthodox and the eromen cathloic church.
Pope Gregory pleas forgive me!
Pope gregory becaome the pope in 1073. King henrgy thought this was a direct attack in his power and rights. THiset a clash of wills and conflicts between the two men.
the conflict between pope gregory and king henry was fought by ignoring each others poloys. They diagrred untill they both died. ACrioss europe, members of the clergy and the secular rulars took sides.
the conflicted endedwhen kingjhenry went to pope grehggorys housee and stood out in the snow for 3 days. the condrdut of worms gave the church authority to apponit bushups. this also allowed empors to give fiefs to giv to popes to show loyality. this was not a succeses because conflicts still arose.
