Ugh, I just hate Gregory, you know what, I'm just going to ignore his rules and appoint you as an official bishop.
Since King Henry thinks he can just discard my rules I'm going to assign you as my official bishop, will you accept?
Please, please, please Gregory , being the pope isn't even that exciting, is it? Please, I beg of you, for go your role as pope.
No! And there's no way you can stop me from removing you as emperor either, but I'll be nice and let you loose on this one.
The quarrel between Pope Gregory and King Henry first began when Henry ignored Pope Gregory's rules. So he decided to do the exact opposite his rules said by appointing his own bishop for Milan, Italy. This really angered Gregory and gave Henry a taste of his own medicine.
Thank you all for coming to this activity. It is much more peaceful without Henry around.
So then, in response, Pope Gregory appointed a rival bishop. Just to anger King Henry even more than before. As a result Henry then decided to continue the quarrel and go even further than last time.
You now are all free from King Henry's grasp!
This time, King Henry decided to at least try to remove Gregory from the role of pope. He decided that violence is never the answer so he thought of a way to at least change Gregory's mind, and to convince him that pope is a not a very fun role to have. Pope Gregory did not believe him and ignored his request.
I forgive you.
Thank you Pope Gregory, so much.
After King Henry's action, the quarrel continued between the two men. With Pope Gregory excommunicating King Henry from all church activities. Leaving King Henry to spend his nights alone in his large castle.
Pope Gregory then also freed all of Henry's subjects from feudal oaths. So now they are all free and not slaves to King Henry. That was the only good thing Pope Gregory did for King Henry and his people, ever.
Soon after, King Henry made a trek to Pope Gregory's castle to ask for the pope's forgiveness. Eventually, the pope did forgive him but the quarrel continued between the two. Even after both of them died there were always fights between pope's and kings, they will never be as equals.
