One day on the road a lawyer which to test Jesus asked what he should do to get eternal life, Jesus replied by telling the lawyer ‘to love your neighbour as yourself’. The neighbour asking Jesus asked ‘who is my neighbour?’ Replying Jesus answered by telling a story of a man walking from Jerusalem to Jericho where he met a band of robbers.
The robbers stripped the man, robbed him and beat the man, leaving him on the ground as the band of robbers walked away.
After being beaten the man stayed lying on the road as a priest walked down the road. Seeing the man on the ground the priest crossed to the other side of the road and continued on his travels. Once the priest had gone, another man a levite came by on the road and like the priest crossed across to the other side of the road on seeing the man.
After the levite had passed a third man came by on the road, this time a samaritan. The samaritan did not cross the road like the other travellers but instead went to the man on the ground.
The Samaritan bandaged the man and treated him after his beating. After he had done this the Samaritan put the man on his animal and continued his travels with the man.
The Samaritan stopped at a inn and left the man with the innkeeper and promising to pay back any money spent on the man on his return. The Samaritan gave the innkeeper some coins and left the inn. After Jesus told this story, he asked the lawyer which of the three men passing by on the road was their neighbor, in which the lawyer responded with the Samaritan.
