Storyboard Text

  • Lorraine Hansberry was born on May 19, 1930. She was the youngest of her four siblings, and she grew up in Chicago, USA. Her father, Carl Hansberry had a real estate business and her mother, Nannie was a school teacher.

  • At the age of eight years old, the family wanted to move to a town, which was a limited neighborhood. The restrictive agreements, required white property owners to promise not to sell to black people. So, Carl, her father got help to secretly buy a house there with the help of white realtors, and at the end they ended up living there.
  • Lorraine then graduated from high school and stared liking theater. She then studied at the University of Wisconsin but dropped out before finishing her studies. After that In 1950, she traveled to New York to pursue a career as a writer, and she wrote for many people. She met Robert Nemiroff, a Jewish writer who shared her political views, at a protest about racism at New York University.

  • On June 20, 1953, Lorraine Hansberry and Robert Nemiroff got married at the Hansberrys' house in Chicago after meeting each other at the protest. 
  • Later on, husband and Burt D'Lugoff  wrote a song and it was released in 1956. Hansberry was able to stop working and dedicate her time to writing as a result of the profits. The Crystal Stair, based on Langston Hughes' poem "Mother to Son," was her next project. Hughes' poetry "Harlem: A Dream Deferred" inspired her to rename it A Raisin in the Sun.
  • Lorraine Hansberry then made 2 plays, "A Raisin in the Sun" and "The Sign in Sydney Burstein's Window" before dying from cancer at the age of 34. And, before that she divorced her husband, Robert, but after her death, Robert still continued her work.
