  • "The Skarlet Ibis" by James Hurst takes place in North Carolina in the 1900s. The main characters are the narrator and his younger brother, doodle.
  • Climax
  • Doodles real name is actually William Armstrong but one problem is that he can't walk. He can't walk because of a disability he was born with. 
  • Falling Action
  • His brother sets a goal for doodle (more for himself) to make doodle walk.  He wants doodle to walk of course but he wants the attention of teaching him more.
  • Resolution
  • After doodle learns to walk, a dead scarlet ibis was found under a tree. Doodle insists he buries it before eating his dessert.
  • Doodle is sad about the bird dying so he buries it under a tree. His brother visits to tell him to come in for dessert.
  • The two brothers race back to their house only doodle dies from running too fast and his heart gave out. The family is devastated and the scarlet ibis reminds them of him.
