  • Kit's dissuction with John about Mercy

  • Charter Granted by Charles 11 of the  Connecticut Colony in New England
  • Each year, in the middle of October after all the corn is harvest, a party is held for the teenagers of Wethersfield in which they husk corn, hang out, eat food, and play music. And who ever finds the red corn is the one who is most likely to get married so when Judith gets it and says she doesn't need it, thinking John just proposed to her, William takes it and walks over to Kit.
  • Nat's Prank On William
  • That will show him not to marry Kit!
  • Come on, run before we get caught!
  • On her way home from Hannah's house, Kit sees John who after talking about how she shouldn't visit Hannah, reveals that he is in love with Mercy. Even though she is jumping for joy when she hears this , she worries about Judith and the worst thing happens when John comes before the Husking Bee and ask to talk to Matthew and Judith assumes that he wanted to propose and John didn't speak up so now they're married.

  • The charter is a very important piece of paper that grants the Connecticut Colony rules and right and the new governor, Governor Andros, wants to take it away which would leave many people in Connecticut very angry ,such as Matthew, because the wants to keep his rules and rights. So when the Governor comes, people are ready to fight , though they quickly back down when they see the army, and they are all meeting to discuss if they will keep the charter, the lights go off and someone steals it.
  • Prudence
  • Before Prudence: Very skinny, scared and uneducated
  • After Prudence: Confident, not scared to stand up to others, and learning to read and write
  • After the charter was stolen, Nat and three of his sailor friends went to Williams house and pranked him by illuminating his windows with jack-o-lanterns in the middle of the night. They got caught, were put into stocks for the day, had to pay 40 shillings, and were banished from Wethersfield, Nat claims it was well worth it to see Williams face as he is mad Kit is marring another man. After seeing Nat with all the bruises from apples being thrown at him, Kit couldn't stand listen to his punishment so she ran to Hannah's house
  • At Hannah's house Kit, Hannah, and Prudence all sit around and talk while and Prudences writes in Kit's book, Kit discloses that she will marry William as it will get her out of her uncles house but Hannah questions it because she doesn't love him, and Kit learns that Nat, Hannah and Prudence have all been at Hannah's house frequently and it makes Kit feel left out.
  • Before Prudence was very uneducated, scared of her mother and Hannah, and very skinny, while now she is confident in herself, will stand up to her mother to be with Hannah, and is learning how to read and write. She feels very good when she first writes as now she is very confident in herself and at the end of the chapter it foreshadows that the three won;t ever be in Hannah's house again.
