states of matter There are four states of matter, but we only talk about the main three, solid, liquid, and gas. Gas particles move the fastest. Liquids move the second fastest and solids move the slowest. The reason for this is the amount of space the particles have to move. Gas particles are far apart so they can move more freely and can move faster. Liquids are farther apart than solids but still tend to clump together. Solids are really close together and don't move as much as they vibrate. In order to form a gas from a liquid you need to break the bonds that hold them together. The best way to change states i to heat or cool a object. For water to freeze it you need to cool it. To evaporate it you need to heat it.
