  • Strength #1
  • Strength #2
  • Strength #3
  • The first strength of the continental army was how devoted to the cause the soldiers were. The soldiers knew that the war was important to the future of the colonies. They also wanted to protect their families and their land. For these reasons, the soldiers were prepared to die.
  • Weakness #1
  • The second strength of the continental army was their knowledge of the land. Many of the soldiers lived in the colonies, so they were familiar with the land in the area. They used this knowledge to overwhelm the british soldiers with guerilla warfare tactics. This gave them a huge advantage over the british, many of which had never been to the colonies.
  • Weakness #2
  • The third strength of the continental army was the aid from foreign countries. They were given support from both France and Spain, but France helped a lot more. These countries helped to supply the soldiers with weapons, clothes, and food. They even had some men fight alongside the continental army, including Lafayette, who was a general in the army.
  • Weakness #3
  • The first weakness of the continental army was their lack of supplies. The had very little spare clothing, weapons, and food. Since the Articles of Confederation didn't allow the federal government to tax the colonists, they had no way to raise funds. Most of their supplies were own by the men that volunteered.
  • The second weakness of the continental army was their lack of soldiers. Washington only had around 20,000 soldiers with him at a time. The federal government also didn't have the ability to draft people into the war, making it so only volunteers were fighting in the war. Compared to the british's 50,000 soldiers and 30,000 mercenaries, this put the continental army at a huge disadvantage.
  • The third weakness of the continental army was the soldiers weren't properly trained. Many of the soldiers were farmers that believed in the cause, and they had little time to train. The british, on the other hand, were a well established army that were properly trained. This put them at a huge disadvantage.
