  • Charles dissolved parliament three times between 1625 and 1629. In 1629, he dismissed parliament and resolved to rule alone. This forced him to raise revenue by non-parliamentary means which made him increasingly unpopular.
  • Restoration of the stuart monarchy
  • Complaints started to spread and the kings supporters and parliamentary forces, roundheads, began to fight. Oliver Cromwell had a highly trained army and he himself was an army genius. So he purged parliament for all those who were against him.
  • Glorious revolution
  • Cromwell's army took over and wasted no time in the execution of Charles I, due to his ignoring of the petition, he was executed January 30th. Whatever was left of Parliament, abolished the monarchy and the house of the lords. They then declared England a commonwealth.

  • Cromwell ruled until his death in 1658, then the army began the restoration of the monarchy. Which Charles II took over, the son of Charles I. Charles II then had the brilliant idea to force his ideas upon the English people. He decided to suspend laws that parliament had passed against Puritans and Catholics after the restoration of the monarchy.
  • English nobles invited the Dutch leader, William of Orange, to invade England. Telling them that most of the people wanted a change. William took this as an opportunity to fight France using England's resources. James II, the king after Charles II died, realized what William was doing. James sent forward his army and then fled to France with his wife and son. With the desertion, parliament offered the throne to William and his wife.
  • The English bill of rights forced everyone, even kings and queens, to follow things subjected under the same laws. This limited the power of the monarch and it forced them to make decisions based under the laws. It meant monarchs had no absolute power.
