The narrator introduces himself and says he has a disease and is trying to prove himself not mad. "The disease had sharpened my senses, - not destroyed - not dulled them."
He stalks the old man. "And every night, about midnight, I turned the latch of his door and opened it - oh so gently, and thrust in my head."
Rising Action 2
He kills the old man. "In an instant I dragged him to the floor, and pulled the heavy bed over him. For many minutes, the heart beat on with a muffled sound. At length, it ceased. The old man was dead."
Narrator cleans up the mess. "I then took up three planks from the flooring of the chamber, and I replaced the boards so cleverly, that no human eye could detect anything wrong."
The police knock on the door. "As the bell sounded the hour, there was a knock at the door. There entered 3 men who introduced themselves, with perfect suavity, as officers of the police."
He confesses to killing the old man. "Villians!" I shrieked, "dissemble no more! I admit the deed!- tear up the planks- here, here!- it is the beating of his hideous heart!"
