Tomas wakes up in a metal elevator not able to remember anything. Only his name. He is going up an elevator to a place called the glade. This is a farm inside a enormous stone maze. There he will meet a few dozen other people that are like him. He is part of a test run by a organization called WICKED.

Ben is trying to kill Tomas with a knife. He says that he say Tomas in the changing. Alby saves him by shooting be in the cheek with an arrow. Ben doesn't die but he is later killed when the Gladers banish him. The put him out in the maze at night letting grievers, the monsters in the maze, kill him.

In the glade there are all boys. Then suddenly a girl shows up and says, "Everything is going to change." Everyone is confused then she goes into a coma for no reason. No one knows what is going on. They take this mysterious new girl to the infirmary.

Tomas and Minho run is the maze until they get to an exit. The exit is a drop strait down to the ground, but in the middle, they find out by throwing rocks, there is an invisible square where you wont fall. They know that this might be a clue to how they must exit the maze. They also think this is where the grievers, the monsters in the maze go during the day.
Weird. Maybe that is a clue to getting out!

Tomas, Minho, and others are decipher the maps of the maze. They realize that the maze moving make a pattern. If you hold up some mazes by each other they make words that will help them get out of the maze.

A few dozen gladers made it out of the maze. The papers revealed a code that Tomas typed in to a computer after going through the invisible square. What they didn't realize, though, is that this is only their first trial and they will have more.
