- On this day, King Louis XVI was executed. He was for treason and the day before tried to escape. He was executed in front of the whole community as they chanted "Die King Louis!"

- A period of violence during the French Revolution incited by conflict between two rival political factions, the Girondins and the Jacobins, and marked by mass executions of “the enemies of the revolution.” The death toll ranged in the tens of thousands, with 16,594 executed by guillotine. Anyone who supported the king was put to death.

- Grenadiers under the command of General Joachim Murat marched into the Orangerie and dispersed the council. This was effectively the end of the Directory. They helped Napoleon to create a new government for the "new world". This led to a new life for the people.
