  • Background: Son of former president John Adams. Quincy Adams was the Secretary of State at the time of election. Results of 1824 Election: He had the second most popular votes and electoral votes. Then, when the election fell to the House of Representatives, the Speaker threw his vote to Adams, influencing the rest of the House in Adam's favor. Adams became the President.
  • Background: Clay helped negotiate the treaty of Ghent, which ended the War of 1812. He was the Speaker of the House at the time of the election. Results of 1824 Election: Henry Clay got the least amount of electoral votes, so he was eliminated when the vote fell to the House. However, Clay was the Speaker of the House, so he had powerful influence over who won.
  • Background: He was a war hero who won the battle of New Orleans and got Florida for the US. Results of 1824 Election: He got the most popular and electoral votes, but he did not have a majority. The election fell to the House, and Clay, the speaker, threw his vote to Adams and Jackson lost the election.
