- Cindy Matthews is Cole's mother. She was portrays as a drunk and an abuser towards Cole. Cindy is a helper in aiding Cole after she quit drinking, and wants to help Cole for once."How are you doing?" Each visit, she repeated, "I love you. You know that, don't you?" - Cindy

- Edwin is an Tlingit elder that is Cole's second mentor. Edwin is shown to be an antagonist towards Cole near the beginning, but is transformed to a minor protagonist halfway through the novel."The greatest test of courage on earth is to bear defeat without losing heart" - Edwin
- Garvey is one of Cole's mentors throughout the story. He helps Cole discover why he's angry at others, and helps Cole to heal all of the open spaces that were empty."Anybody can love, forgive and heal." - Garvey
- Peter is Cole's victim. Peter is very mean towards Cole and assaults him various times, but soon becomes somewhat friends with Cole, and they begin a mutual relationship. "I think someone should smash Cole's head into a sidewalk so he know how it feels." - Peter
