The White family is at home waiting for their guest (Sergeant-Major Morris) to arrive
They all gathered around the fire to listen to the stories the Sergeant-Major had to share. One in particular was the monkey's paw. It was said to have a spell on it from a very holy man, he wanted to show that fate ruled people's lives. The spell was that three men could have 3 wishes. The Sergeant had been the second person to have the paw and he gave it to Mr. White unwillingly. he warned him that the wishes had consequences
After the Sergeant left Mr. White made his first wish. He first thought that he had everything he wanted and did not know what to wish for. He then made a wish for 200 pounds and the paw moved slightly in his had but nothing happened. The family then proceeded to go to bed
The next day Mr. and Mrs. White were given bad news that there was an accident at work and their son had died. As compensation the parents were given 200 pounds.
That night Mrs. White was up late weeping over her son when she soon went over to Mr. White and begged him to use the second wish to bring their son back to life. He then got the Monkey's paw and made the wish.
After a while, there was a knock at the door and Mrs. White ran towards the door but Mr. White was hesitant on what they would find at the door. Scared at what might be a monster behind the door Mr. White used his last wish to undo his last, and the knocking stopped
