  • The Battle of Antietam started on September 17, 1862. Between Confederate and the Union States of America The Battle started at the Antietam creek just outside of Sharpsburg, Maryland.
  • The Union started on the east side of the creek. The Confederates led by General Robert E. Lee and the Union led by General George B. McClellan. The Union forces outnumbered the Confederates 2:1
  • This battle at Antietam lasted only 12 hours. However, it was considered to be the bloodiest day in military history with 22,717 dead, wounded or missing.
  • The Union considered themselves to have won this battle.
