Oh no! It's not fair! You didn't give him enough time to choose!
The townspeople slowly gather in the square while the children run around collecting rocks and playing. The men and women gather in groups anticipating Mr. Summers and the drawing.
Mr. Summers gets the black box from this year's hiding spot while the villagers call their children back to get ready to start the drawing. Mr. Summers starts calling names to make sure that everybody who is drawing is there.
Mr. Summers calls names one by one as they come to pick from the box and people are slowly eliminated as the villagers start to figure out who has the black mark on their paper. After a few more names, they soon reveal that it is Mr. Hutchinson. Tessie begins complaining because she knows her family will have to pick, and she might die.
The rest of the family begins picking from the box to see who will die. The children all pick, Mr and Mrs. Hutchinson picks, and they each look at their tickets to see if they have it. Everyone but Tessie Hutchinson has looked at their papers and they all don't have it, so they know that Tessie is the one with the black mark who will die.
We don't have it!
It's Tessie! Tessie's got the black mark!
Tessie realizes she was chosen and starts getting worried and scared as she complains that it was unfair and everyone should redraw. She tries to run away but ends up in the middle of the square.
It's not fair! We need to redraw!
The villagers all grab rocks in their hands and close in on Tessie, while she complains and tries to run away. They start throwing rocks at her while she screams that it is not fair. A rock hits her on the side of the head as she tries to run away, getting more frantic. Eventually the villagers completely close in on her.
