Once upon a time, in the middle ages, was a man who would change the church in an astounding way. This little man created something which he never dreamed would happen. His name was Martin Luther.
I put up a charter called the"95 Theses". It was 95 things that the church was doing wrong and needed to fix!
1. Church leaders are to wealthy 2. Church's priest are unholy 3. People can't understand the bible 4. Indulgences
So others and I left the Catholic church to create our own denomination!
Some differences between Protestants and Catholics is that Protestants believe in "Sola Scriptura" where Catholics, along with the bible, believe in the church's traditions. Another difference is that is Protestants don't believe that the pope has authority or is the leader of the church where as Catholics believe the pope is the successor of Peter.
To fix this problem in the church, the church had their own reformation called the Council of Trent. They were going to have three big meetings . They wanted to define the teachings of the church, They wanted get rid of abuse and corruption, and they wanted to regulate training of priests.
Martin believed that "Sola FIde" means that even if someone does works of good mercy, they aren't righteous. Along with Sola Fide, he believed that Sola Gratia meant no one could freely do good works and Sola Christo meant Christ is the sole content of the scriptures.
The Protestant Reformation was a very hectic time in our church's history. Some pros are that the church is now more clear in its teachings and is now more cleaned up in the acts that they do. Of course the church isn't perfect but the church is now more attentive to what they do. Some cons are some people now judge the church the because of all the things that they used to do. Also there were so many splits and from that time to now, there are so many denominations of Christians.
