Arachne & Athene By: Kalayia Edwards
Arcahne and her father lived in village that was tiny and very poor. Arachne father was an dryer of wool. He could dye so many colors of wool. Most people knew him for his clear bright scralet
Since, Arachne grew up helping her dad with his job her task was to spin wool into thread and weave into cloth. Archne had became more skillful at spinning cloth just as her father become skillful at drying wool.
People soon began noticing Arachne's work. The cloth caught their eye because of the beautiful embroidery and the softness of the tread and cloth. Arachne cloths became so famous that people began to travel across the world just to watch her working even nymphs.
Soon people in the crowd watching her spin began whispering that only Athene the goddess taught her to spin this soft cloth. Arachne soon began hearing the what the people in the crowd were saying. When Arachne heard this she would state that "I used her own bear hands to learn, and worked day and night to learn such of a great skill." She also would state than "If Athene and I would compete she wouldn't be know better than I."
One day an old lady in the crowd spoke, "Reckless girl to think that she is equal to an gooddes." Arachne replied to her saying "Stupid old women, "Arachne indignantly, "who gave you the right to speak to me this way. Arachne also states, I have challenged her to a contest, but she, of course she will not come. It is easy for the gods to avoid matching there skill with that of men. The, old lady threw down her staff and turned into the goddess Athene. When Arachne realized who was standing in front she was shocked."
Arachne soon becomes angry and the only things that came to her head involved evil. As Athene watched Arachne finish her loom she saw that her pattern showed signs of things that insulted her. Without waiting for the cloths to be judged Athene struck Arachne across the face. Arachne tries to hang herself because she doesn't want to live in a world being insulted. Athene tells her to on her live on. When Athene is finished she turns Arachne into a tiny little spider. as her punishment for being wicked.
Without word they then the both began spinning thread into cloth. There where many colors of thread lied beside Aranche and Athene. Soon there was no sound in then room except the sound of rollers moving back and forth. When Aranche stole a glance at Athene cloth it was a pattern meaning last warning.
I many stories characters can be hubris in this story the main character Aarache show any act of hubris. Hubris mean having and showing excessive pride. Aarchne is an hubris person because she was putting her self at a higher level than the gooddes Athena. She was a great spinner but she couldn't be better than everyone especially Athene. Arachne and Athene relates to the real world because it show how spider same to be.
